As the country was gearing up for the Spanish American War, historic Fort Mott rose up as part of a triumvirate of forts along the banks of the Delaware River. Along with Fort DuPont and Fort Delaware, Fort Mott, which was built in 1896, stayed active until shortly after World War I. Although it is defunct as a defensive military installation, it is still a really cool place to spend the day. The battlements and magazines are great for exploring, climbing and looking at the riverfront vistas.
Back in the park, you can take a walk along the interpretive nature trail that is great for beginning hikers and also easily accessible for people with disabilities. The wide open spaces and river breezes make it a popular spot for kite-flying, especially along the top of the battlements.
But it is the Ferry that links to Fort Delaware that brings many people to Fort Mott. When you board the ferry, it not only transports you across the Delaware River, it also transports you back in time to the Civil War with Ft. Delaware’s costumed reenactors.
