Built in 1823, the JD Thompson Inn was the former homestead of John D. Thompson, a prominent statesman and area businessman. Thompson held the position of Postmaster and also served as Sheriff of Burlington County. In 1828, Thompson purchased the Tuckerton Stage Line, which delivered mail from Tuckerton to Philadelphia. It is believed he operated the Stage Line and a tavern from the building at the same time.
In 1899, the property was conveyed to George and Helen Mott and remained in the family until it was converted into an inn in 1996. It is currently owned by Lorenzo and Catherine Lauro. This Victorian bed-and-breakfast has been renovated to include all modern amenities while maintaining the integrity of the beautiful original architectural features such as a mahogany three-story staircase, ten foot ceilings, and ornate plaster moldings.
In the spacious dining room, breakfast is served daily. The centerpiece of the dining room is a magnificent 19th century Italian Marketry cabinet surrounded by six tables for 2 or 4. Weather permitting breakfast is also served on the veranda.
A deck wraps around the Inn where one may have morning coffee or afternoon tea. Guests are also invited to enjoy afternoon refreshments in the beautiful gazebo or relax in the outdoor spa.
Sounds like the perfect weekend getaway to me!
