You’ll be amazed at how much fun the Pinelands Discovery Festival packs into just five hours. But then, the PInelands are pretty amazing and this annual October festival will introduce you to many of the wonders hidden within.
Get a glimpse into local “Piney” culture with tours of Historic Whitesbog Village where the blueberry was first cultivated. You’ll also learn about the role agriculture plays in the region’s history and economy with visits to local cranberry bogs within the Pinelands and ecology walks led by naturalists who can help you discover the flora and fauna that are native to the region.
Throughout the day, you can attend workshops and information sessions including:

• Historian Tim Hart's discussion on War At The Shore-Revolution in the Pines
• Russell Juelg, author and PPA naturalist, will give an Overview of the Rare and Endangered Pinelands Native Plant Species
• Author Barbara Solem-Stull will give a presentation on Ghost Towns of the Pines
• Ray Young will offer A Glimpse into the Prehistoric Past of New Jersey
• Brian Smith with give an Introduction to Geocaching
• Richard Dovey will discuss Alternative Energy Resources

But there are lots of fun and games, too. Not to mention the photography, crafts and art created by local artisans. Interactive activities and exhibits will provide you with info about how you can help protect the Pinelands for future generations. And you won’t want to miss the excitement when the cyclists participating in the five-day Tour de Pines bicycle tour of the Pinelands end the final leg of their journey.

BRING THE FAMILY

Admission is free and parking is a budget-friendly, family-friendly $5 per carload.

COME PREPARED

Sunscreen is a must and insect repellant isn't a bad idea either.

WHO KNEW

The Pinelands is home to  approximately 55 kinds of plants and 28 species of birds, reptiles and amphibians which are considered endangered or threatened.

JERSEY DEVIL SIGHTINGS

During the week of January 16-23, 1909, there were so many "sightings" that the entire region was riddled with fear. Schools closed, factories shut down and armed posses roamed the streets searching for the beady-eyed monster.

VOLUNTEER

Call the PInelands Preservation Alliance to find out about the many volunteer opportunities for the Discovery Festival.  The Festival will also feature exhibit booths by other organizations that are in need of volunteers, too.
