Chatsworth Cranberry Festival sure packs a lot into two days. Start with the arts, crafts and antiques. More than 200 artists from around the nation are selected to exhibit their handmade creations in this juried event.

Booth after booth is filled with one-of-a-kind jewelry, watercolors, candles, oil paintings and sculpture. Antique dealers are also on hand with everything from fun collectibles to serious, high-quality pieces.

But it is the woodworking that captures many people’s hearts. Many local artists from the Pine Barrens display their hand-carved wooden artworks, Adirondack-style furniture and other crafts.

Food is an important part of any festival and the Chatsworth Cranberry Festival is no exception. Dozens of cranberry-inspired treats are offered and some are specially made for the event. Using local cranberries supplied by the festival organizers, Amish bakers whip up homemade baked goods and a local ice creamery has concocted a festival favorite – cranberry ice cream – sold only at the event.

Throughout the day, you can dance to music by one of the region’s favorite Southern/Classic rock bands, Jersey Bound. Or you can join in one of the festival’s new activities – a tour of a local cranberry bog.

BRING THE FAMILY

Although the festival itself does not offer children's activities, a number of vendors do set up activities in locations adjacent to the festival.  Kids can romp around on climbing walls, get their faces painted, create sand art and other activities.  There are fees for these activities.

COME PREPARED

To avoid traffic jams and parking problems, arrive early. And by early we mean between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.

WHO KNEW

In its heydey, Chatsworth was a favorite country vacation spot of many  Robber Barons.  The Vanderbilts, Morgans and other millionaires relaxed at the elegant Chatsworth Club whle their servants stayed at the White Horse Inn. The Chatsworth Club  has since burned down but proceeds from the festival are being used to restore the White Horse Inn which will be used as a community center.

JERSEY DEVIL SIGHTINGS

No Jersey Devil sightings but Chatsworth, formerly known as Shamong, has its own resident ghost, the  White Horse of Shamong. Centuries after it was first sighted,  townspeople still report sightings of the White Horse of Shamong particularly around the hunting season in November and December.

VOLUNTEER

There are lots of volunteer opportunities.  To become part of the festivities, call 609-726-9237 or attend one of the monthly  volunteer committee meetings, held at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month at the Woodland Township Municipal Building.

LEAVE NO TRACE

Please respect the displays of farmers, artists and craftsmen.
