Demitroff has long been active in ecological studies. He receive his undergraduate degree in Agricultural Sciences at Cook College, Rutgers University in 1982. He then joined the Department of Geography at University of Delaware to earn his Masters in Science. Currently, Demitroff is a fellow and Ph.D. student at University of Delaware and is a member of the institution's Permafrost Group. His interest in the Late-Pleistocene conditions of South Jersey and the Pine Barrens began in 1999. His unique direction sparked the interest of Dr. Hugh French, who was then Dean of Science and Professor of Geology and Geography at the University of Ottawa. French and Demitroff have maintained their working relationship and are vested in exploring the unusual frozen dirt of the Pinelands.

Demitroff, aside from writing numerous papers on his work, gives presentations throughout South Jersey at local nature clubs, historical societies, and conservation organizations. He has developed an innovative approach to understandably dense material. His presentations combine historical geology with folklore, archaeology, botany, and local legends. He aims to describe over 200,000 years of climate change and propose ideas on how the region's environment influenced its culture and history. Particular focus is given to water flow and supply, the area's diminishing wetlands, and its unusual landforms such as spungs, cripples, blue holes, and savannahs.

Demitroff believes that increase awareness and appreciation for South Jersey wetlands and pinelands will ultimately save this unique environmental treasure. Only after understanding its value, can effective measures be established to protect against sprawl and overdevelopment. Demitroff is also recognized for his depth of knowledge about the area's native plants. He is a NJ Certified Tree Expert.
