Berlin Park
There is a lot of fun packed into Berlin Park's 152 acres. Loll around on the banks of the Great Egg Harbor River, jog the trails, play on the ball fields or let the kids romp around on the playground equipment.

Load up a picnic basket, turn off the cell phone and spend some time with the family at Berlin Park. The 152 acre Park is a little pocket of green, tucked away in Camden County. For a quick jog or lazy walk, five miles of gravel and dirt nature trails wind through the park. There is also a short cinder and gravel bike path for the two-wheel set.

There are lots of ball courts, where you can burn off some energy and a few calories. Bring a few friends and your equipment and head to the basketball court, two softball fields, a sand volleyball court, the roller hockey court and two lit tennis courts. Or bring your rod and reel and see if you can catch what is swimming around in the great Egg Harbor River.

If the sun is becoming too much, catch some shade in one of Berlin Park's three picnic groves and enjoy an al fresco lunch or dinner.

BRING THE FAMILY

Everything about Berlin Park is designed for family fun, from the playground equipment for the youngsters to the sporting activities for older kids.

COME PREPARED

The trails twist and wind so having a GPS with you might be a good idea.  Oh, and watch out for poison ivy.  The Park's crew does a good job of getting rid of it, but it's a stubborn little plant and sometimes it rears its ugly, little, red, three-leafed head.

WHO KNEW

The Great Egg Harbor River got its name from Cornelius Jacobsen Mey.  When the Dutch explorer came into the river's inlet in 1614, he took one look at all the shorebirds and waterfowl eggs and proclaimed it,  "Eyren Haven" -- Dutch for Egg Harbor.

JERSEY DEVIL SIGHTINGS

None that anyone knows of.  But then again, maybe they didn't survive to tell the tale.

VOLUNTEER

Every year, Camden County has a series of clean-up days to keep the parks looking spiffy.  Round up a group of friends and find out how you can lend a hand by calling (856) 216-2128 or (856) 216-2127.

TAKE PUBLIC TRANSIT

Take NJ Transit Bus 554 to Route 30 and Berlin Cross Keys Road. The park is approximately 0.4 miles away. Walk along South White Horse Pike and turn left onto Berlin Cross Keys Road. Walk four blocks until you reach the park.
