So you want to get away from it all. No arcades, no flashing lights, no soy lattes with a sprinkle of cinnamon. Just a day to wander quiet trails, take in some wildlife and revel in peace and quiet.

Aim your car towards Four Mile Springs Preserve and you’ll have more than 1,227 acres to do just that. With over five miles of trail loops that wind through the isolated pitch pine forests and ancient stands of Atlantic White Cedar, you can hike or go mountain biking along the sandy roads (no motors, of course). And if you want to go horseback riding, just stick to the main trails.

If you are into geologic phenomena, stick to the red trail and you’ll hit upon something called a spung. (Yes, you read that right.) A spung is a hydrologically isolated wetland that depends entirely on rain and snow to keep its water levels up. This one has a layer of clay which means it can’t fill up with ground water so whatever falls from the sky is what's in there.

BRING THE FAMILY

Like most preserves, Four Mile Springs Preserve is long on nature and short on creature comforts. So if the family would rather hang out in the woods than at a snack shop, this is your place.

COME PREPARED

Chiggers and ticks love this neck of the woods so wear long sleeved clothing and long pants in light colors. It makes it easier to spot the little bugs in order to peel them off.  And stock up on insect repellant.  You'll need it.

WHO KNEW

The owner of the land that is now Four Mile Springs Preserve originally wanted to develop it.  However, a local group, the Burrs Mill Hunt Club, persuaded him to let them use the land for hunting. It took them 12 years, but they finally convinced the owner to donate the land, meaning that it will remain natural and undeveloped.
